The 4 Sunglass Must Haves

It's important to protect our eyes from harmful UV rays. Sunlight does more than damage our skin. It is possible to sunburn the eye. Damaging the cornea and or the retina. There are 4 things a good pair of sunglasses should do for you.

Protection from the suns UV rays
UV light damages the cornea and the retina. Good sunglasses can eliminate UV rays completely. UV Radiation has been found to be linked to Cataracts, and Macular Degeneration.

Cataract - is when the normal clear lens within the becomes opaque (cloudy), this leads to blurred or lost vision.

Macular Degeneration - is when the retina which contains nerves becomes damaged leaving the blurred vision and trouble discerning colours.

Protection from Intense Light
When the eye receives too much light it naturally closes the iris. Once it has closed the iris as far as it can, the next step is squinting, if there is still too much light the result is damage to the retina. Good sunglasses can block light entering the eyes by as much as 97% to avoid damage.

Protection from Glare

Certain surfaces, such as water, can reflect a great deal of light, and the bright sports can be distracting or can hide objects. Good sunglasses can completely eliminate this kind of glare using polarization.

Eliminate Specific Frequencies of Light
Certain frequencies can blur vision and others can enhance contrast. Choosing the right colour for your sunglasses, lets them work better in specific situations.

Bargain Bin Sunglasses

When you buy a pair of cheap sunglasses, you often give up all of these benefits and can even make things worse. For example, if you sunglasses offer little or no UV protection, you increase your exposure to UV rays. The cheap sunglasses block some of the light, causing your iris to open allowing more light in. This lets in more UV rays as well, increasing the damage UV light can cause to the retina. UV radiation is also a contributing factor to ocular complications including cataracts, macular degeneration and tumors of the eye.
