A Shade Above the Rest ...
People are spending more and more money on
sunscreen and anti-wrinkle cream, but are
forgetting about protecting their eyes from the
sun. It is important to protect your eyes from
harmful UV radiation (Uv rays). Sunlight does more
damage to the eyes than simple deepening laugh
lines. Many people are surprised to learn that it
is possible to sunburn the eye, or that the sun
can be a contributing factor to ocular
complications including cataracts, pterygium,
macular degeneration, intraocular tumors and skin
cancer around the eye area.
It is important to protect your eyes with proper
quality sunglasses. Sunglasses that are optically
made offer the best quality. Optically made means
that the sunglasses are made the same way as
everyday eyeglasses. In fact, most eyeglass
manufacturers are our suppliers of sunglasses.
This is what sets apart drug store and gas station
sunglasses from high quality sunglasses. Starting
with the lenses; high quality sunglasses are
optically manufactured and polished, where the
cheap poor quality ones are stamped out of a sheet
of thin plastic. Optically made lenses also use
the best materials such as polycarbonate, glass
and plastic. Some will have scratch
resistant coatings and/or anti-reflective
coatings. All have 100% UV protection and some are
polarized. Polarized lenses have a special filter
built in to reduce glare from water, sand, snow
and pavement. Only high quality materials go into
sunglass frames. Metals with low nickel content
are used. This prevents early breakdown of the
metal and is less likely to cause allergic
reactions. Stainless steel and titanium are new
materials starting to be used more in sunglass
frames. Other frames details which are given lots
of attention are the solderjoints, applied color,
multi-layers or clear-coat finish, spring hinges
and even down to the eyewire and hinge screws.
Most of these screws have a silicon strip inserted
to inhibit the screws coming loose.
