Sight Test vs. Complete Eye Health Exam; what’s the difference?

Sight tests are advertised by opticians (those who sell eyeglasses) in order to make lenses in eyeglasses. Their testing is based solely on a computerized measurement, and they do not test the general function or health of the eyes. Their education is limited to a few weeks of training. They are not eye doctors, and they cannot evaluate or diagnose any eye health problems. As you can imagine, the practice of sight testing is quite controversial as it gives a false impression of providing an eye exam. In fact, some places even call it an "eye test" when it is no more than testing your sight.

Doctors of optometry, like Dr. McClung, provide complete eye health examinations. During your eye examination, Dr. McClung, will check not only your vision but will also assess the general function, coordination, alignment, and health of the eyes. Any eye disease or other problem that could potentially compromise your vision must be found early. As such, everyone should have a regular complete eye health and vision exam by a doctor of optometry

Children’s Exams Information

Alberta Health Care covers eye examinations once each year for those ages 0 to 18 years.

Eye examinations are vital to the health and development of a child's sight and should be done at age 6 months, age 3, age 5, and yearly thereafter. Instead of using a regular eye chart, Dr. McClung has various techniques and tools to help keep a child's attention during the testing. These tests are fun and non-evasive but will help determine how the eyes and vision are developing. Dr. McClung will test the eyes reaction to light, test eye coordination, test muscle and nerve development, and of course vision and the health of the eyes. And yes, Dr. McClung can tell the prescription of even a 6 month old to determine if they need glasses or not. It's fun

Plus Optix is the latest way to check the visual needs of your child.

The Newest Technology

Optomap Retinal Exam

In our continued efforts to bring the most advanced technology available to our patients Dr. McClung is proud to announce the inclusion of the Optomap Retinal Exam as an integral part of the eye exam.

Many eye problems can develop without warning and progress with no symptoms. Early on, you might not even notice any change in your vision. However, diseases such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinal tears or detachments, as well as other health problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure can be detected with a thorough exam of the retina. The retina is the part of your eye that catches the image of what you are looking at, similar to the film in a camera.

An Optomap Retinal Exam Provides:

A scan to confirm a healthy eye or, to detect the presence of diseases
An overview or map of the retina, giving Dr. McClung a more detailed view than he can achieve by other means.
The opportunity for you to view and discuss the Optomap images of your eye with Dr. McClung at the time of your exam
A permanent record for your medical file, enabling Dr. McClung to make important comparisons if potential problems show themselves at a future examination

RD Secondary Metastasized Lung Cancer
Healthy Eye

Dr. McClung strongly believes that the Optomap Retinal Exam is an essential part of your comprehensive eye exam and highly recommends it for all patients. This screening is included in all Adult Exams but is not covered by Alberta Health Care and therefore is optional for Children and Seniors as there is an additional cost.
